Top 10 Books for Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and Parenting

By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, About.com

Knowledge is power. Books are a large source for how we learn about pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting. Here you will find all of my recommendations for books in various categories, from infertility to pregnancy, breastfeeding to parenting and fertility to pregnancy loss. If you have a book you think belongs on this list, tell everyone about it in the forum.

1. Pregnancy Books

There are so many pregnancy books available on pregnancy, labor, birth, babies and breastfeeding, where do you start? Here are some of the ones that I have found to be well-rounded, informational and sometimes even fun!

2. Baby Name Books

Trying to name your baby can be a difficult task. Thankfully we have plenty of book options to help us find just the right name. Start early in your pregnancy and read names often, narrowing your list. These books will help you find names you didn't know existed or find the meaning of names you didn't understand. I still pour over baby name books on a regular basis.

3. Pregnancy Books for Children

When it comes to adding a new baby in your life, books are a great way to introduce the concept to the new brother or sister.

4. Books to Help You Prepare for a Natural Childbirth

If you are considering having your baby without medications like the epidural, it is important that you prepare your mind, your body and your support system. These books all offer something special to helping you build your ideal birth and dealing with labor as it happens, including twists and turns that may be unexpected in the road.

5. Multiple Pregnancy Books

Finding out you're pregnant with one baby is really exciting and often sends us on a quest for more information. Until recently, the mother who found she was blessed with twins, triplets, or other higher order multiples was out of luck. Here are some of my favorite books relating to having multiple babies.

6. Books to be Read to Babies (in utero)

Recently we've heard a lot about the importance of reading to our children. This begins during pregnancy and continues on into their lives. Reading to babies can be a lot of fun. Your baby may even remember the rhyme and rhythm of the books you read while they were in utero! So pick up a book and have some fun while boosting their brain development.

7. Breastfeeding Books

Breastfeeding may be natural but there are a lot of things that you still need to pay attention to and figure out like working and breastfeeding, how to choose the right breast pump and when and how to wean.

8. Baby Shower Planning Books

Baby showers are designed to be special. Whenever I throw a big party, I like to have some help. These baby shower planning books are great companions to throw the perfect baby shower or blessing way, even if you don't use them word for word. The ideas are fresh and new and help you build your own ideas about how to plan the perfect shower for that special mother-to-be. So if you're looking for recipes, baby shower themes, etiquette, or even a great cake recipe, these books are great places to start.

9. Baby and Infant Sleep Books

Getting your baby to sleep. It's the quest of every parent of a newborn. How do you find a good sleeping schedule for your baby that also works for you? Some babies are fussy and have colic, others nap like a dream, but wake at night. Here are what some of the experts have to say about helping your baby sleep at night.

10. Pregnancy Loss Books

Pregnancy losses, like miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, can effect about 1 in 5 couples. When you're going through a loss it can feel like you are the only one who has ever felt this way. You may want answers to technical questions. You may want to know how others felt. You might even want to know what happens next. These books can help answer those questions.
