The Bottom Line

Meditations for Pregnancy by Michelle LeClaire O'Neill is a very interesting pregnancy book. The positive spin and relaxing nature of this book can help you put even the busiest mind at ease. There are weekly meditations that frame the changes of pregnancy nicely without being judgemental.
Pros
  • Simple, easy to understand meditations.
Cons
  • The CD is nice but the music is not my style.

Description

  • There are meditations for week 5 through week 40 of pregnancy.
  • The topics include fetal development, labor, pregnancy, and baby's daily life in utero.
  • Non-judgmental tone throughout the book.
  • I love the choices of words. For example in referring to fetal movements, "...kisses me softly with your knee..."

Guide Review - Meditations for Pregnancy

Regardless of how you feel about the word meditation, Meditations for Pregnancy is a great book, no matter where you stand in the spectrum of meditations. O'Neill has done an excellent job of writing out the thoughts and feelings that are most common in pregnancy without putting a scary spin on them. The additional facts about the baby's growth is reassuring and delightfully well written.

There is poetry in small bits scattered throughout the book. It's just enough to bring a different flavor without becoming a poetry book.

Each week ends with a section called "I will..." giving the mother an active voice in her pregnancy. There are also occasional sidebars with helpful tips.

There is a CD that comes with the book to be used for a guided meditations. The voice is pleasant and the words are really soothing. It's was the music that really turned me off. While it was soft and slow, I found it irritating. With practice I was able to ignore the music and focus on the words. This music will probably appeal to many people as it's a very common relaxation flavor.

This book is the perfect gift for a newly expectant mother-to-be.
